Flow Mark-free Vinyl is a calendered PVC self-adhesive film engineered to eliminate the surface streaks caused by uneven material flow during calendering — delivering a perfectly uniform surface for sharper print clarity and more consistent colour reproduction.
Flow Mark-free Vinyl is a calendered PVC self-adhesive film manufactured with a specially formulated PVC compound that eliminates visible flow marks — surface streaks caused by uneven material flow during the calendering process. The result is a perfectly uniform, streak-free surface that delivers sharper print clarity and more consistent colour reproduction across the full roll width.
Flow marks are a common quality defect in calendered PVC films. During calendering, molten PVC compound is passed through a series of heated rollers to form a continuous film. If the compound's viscosity is not precisely controlled — due to formulation inconsistencies, temperature variation, or roller speed fluctuations — the material can flow unevenly across the roll width, leaving faint parallel streaks or bands on the film surface. These streaks are often invisible to the naked eye under standard lighting but become clearly visible when the film is printed, particularly in large solid-color areas or gradient fills where tonal uniformity is critical.
Grace Color's Flow Mark-free Vinyl is produced using a proprietary PVC compound formulation with tightly controlled melt viscosity and a modified calendering process that maintains uniform material flow across the full working width. Inline surface inspection is conducted during production to verify streak-free uniformity before the roll is wound. The result is a face film with a surface roughness profile that is consistent from edge to edge and from roll to roll.
The uniform surface of Flow Mark-free Vinyl provides several measurable print performance benefits. First, ink absorption is consistent across the full print width, eliminating the banding artefacts that can appear when ink interacts with surface irregularities. Second, colour density and gamut are more predictable, reducing the need for colour correction between rolls. Third, the film's 25% translucency makes it backlit-compatible, meaning it can be used for lightbox graphics and window displays where even light transmission is essential — and where any surface non-uniformity would be immediately apparent when backlit.
Flow Mark-free Vinyl is particularly well suited to applications where surface uniformity and print precision are critical. These include high-end retail window displays, lightbox graphics in shopping malls and airports, backlit point-of-sale materials, and premium vehicle graphics where large solid-color panels are used. It is also an excellent choice for any application where the printed output will be viewed under raking or directional light, which tends to reveal surface defects that are invisible under diffuse lighting.
Standard calendered self-adhesive vinyl is produced to general commercial tolerances and is entirely suitable for the majority of large-format printing applications. Flow Mark-free Vinyl is a premium specification product intended for applications where the highest possible surface uniformity is required. The price premium over standard vinyl is modest, and for applications where print quality is the primary criterion, the improvement in output consistency typically justifies the additional cost.
Grace Color's Flow Mark-free Vinyl is available in gloss and matte finishes, with a PVC film thickness of 0.08 mm and a total product thickness (including adhesive and liner) of approximately 0.14 mm. The adhesive is a permanent acrylic formulation with a grey release liner (double side PE paper). Roll widths from 0.61 m to 1.60 m are available.
